What it is and context: 30 years of theater that speaks to life
If you are one of those who thinks that Pasto only lives for the Carnival, you are missing out on the other great cultural event of the year. The San Juan de Pasto International Theater Festival celebrates its # (30) edition between August 15 and 29, 2026, and it is not just another event: it is one of the most important performing arts platforms in southwestern Colombia and a mandatory meeting point for those who understand theater as a mirror of reality.
This year's motto is "Audiences for theater, citizens for life", a slogan that is not merely decorative. Behind that phrase is a clear commitment: that the stage should not be a luxury for a few, but a cultural right that reaches neighborhoods, communes, and municipalities. And the program confirms it. It is not just about watching plays; it is about conversing, training, and inhabiting the city differently for fifteen days.

The festival is made possible thanks to the support of the Ministry of Cultures, Arts, and Knowledge – National Program for Cultural Concertation, IBERESCENA, the Administrative Directorate of Culture of Nariño, and the Mayor's Office of Pasto – Pasto Secretary of Culture. A little-known fact: the first edition was held in 1996, making this version a celebration of three uninterrupted decades of cultural management, something very few regional festivals in Colombia can boast of.
If you have never attended, know that the format is not the typical "buy a ticket and sit down to watch." Here, theater takes to the streets, enters schools, occupies parks, and reaches neighboring municipalities. The program includes national and international companies, training processes, talks, and experiences designed for the entire community. It is, in short, a celebration that belongs to all of Nariño.
Event details: dates, schedule, and what you can't miss
The two weeks of theater: from August 15 to 29
The edition does not just last a single weekend. There are fifteen continuous days of programming, which allows for plans both for those living in Pasto and for those traveling from other cities. The opening is scheduled for Saturday, August 15, and the closing will be on Saturday, August 29. In between, a marathon of performances, workshops, and meetings that is worth reviewing carefully.
The official program was published on August 5, 2026, by the Secretary of Culture of Pasto on its social media channels, and it can be downloaded directly from the link they shared on Facebook. If you prefer to plan everything in advance, we recommend downloading it and marking the must-see performances from now on, as several international shows often have limited capacity.
Companies and shows: what you will see
Although the full lineup includes dozens of productions, there are three types of shows that are always the most anticipated:
- Indoor plays: productions by national and international companies in conventional theaters, ideal for those seeking more intimate proposals with high technical quality.
- Street performances: large-format shows in public spaces such as Plaza de Nariño and Parque de Santiago. They are free and perfect for the whole family.
- Community experiences: interventions in neighborhoods and rural areas, often with the participation of the local community. This is where you truly feel the festival's spirit.
As for invited countries, IBERESCENA guarantees the presence of companies from Spain and Latin America, while the national quota is usually represented by established groups from Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, and, of course, Nariño. A tip: don't miss the works by local companies. Nariño's theater has its own voice that blends Andean tradition with contemporary languages, and it is a unique opportunity to see that cultural DNA live.
Parallel activities: training and conversation
The festival is not just performances. The official program also includes:
- Training workshops for actors, directors, and cultural managers, many of them free with prior registration.
- Talks with invited directors and playwrights, where the role of theater in contemporary society is discussed.
- Showcases of pedagogical processes: groups from schools and universities in Pasto present their productions, demonstrating that the generational handover is assured.
These activities usually take place at the Casa de la Cultura de Pasto and at the University of Nariño, although some reach municipalities like Ipiales, Túquerres, and La Cruz, where the festival also has a presence. If you are a performing arts student or simply curious about the backstage, these are the events you cannot miss.
Stages and venues: where theater lives in Pasto
One of the festival's strengths is that it decentralizes the offerings. Not everything happens in the historic center, although that's where most activity is concentrated. The main venues are:
- Teatro Imperial: the city's most traditional, located on Carrera 25 with Calle 18. It hosts the most important indoor plays and the opening gala.
- Teatro Municipal de Pasto: another of the city's theatrical temples, with a program that mixes theater, dance, and music.
- Plaza de Nariño: the heart of the city becomes a large open-air stage for large-format performances. Arrive early if you want a good spot.
- Parque de Santiago: a more intimate but equally vibrant space, ideal for medium-format street performances.
- University of Nariño Auditorium: venue for talks and some showcases of pedagogical processes.
- Casa de la Cultura de Pasto: epicenter of workshops and training activities.
In addition to these fixed venues, the festival brings performances to popular neighborhoods and communes such as Centro, La Aurora, El Pilar, and Sumapaz, as well as Comuna 10 and other peripheral sectors. If you want to see theater in a community hall with borrowed seating and an audience that applauds with their hearts, look for the outreach performances: they are the festival's most authentic experience.
A curious fact: for the 30th anniversary edition, the organization has made a special effort to reach the rural villages and townships of Pasto, such as El Encano and Mocondino, where theater is a rare event. This means that if you live in a rural area or know someone who does, keep an eye on the program: theater might come to your doorstep.
Prices and how to get tickets
The good news is that the festival maintains a policy of affordable prices. Although the exact prices for each performance are published in the official program, the historical range has been between $10,000 and $40,000 COP for indoor plays, while street performances are completely free.
For the edition, prices are expected to remain at those levels, but as with everything in Colombia, prices can vary. We recommend:
- Downloading the official program from the link published by the Pasto Secretary of Culture on Facebook, which includes the prices broken down by performance.
- Buying tickets in advance for indoor plays, especially international ones. Last year, several performances sold out on opening day.
- Asking about discounts: students, seniors, and people with disabilities often have special rates upon presenting the corresponding document.
- Keeping an eye out for free performances: in addition to street performances, there are some indoor plays with free admission, usually those by local companies and pedagogical showcases.
Official ticket outlets open one week before the festival begins. The main ones are the Teatro Imperial box office and the Pasto Secretary of Culture, located in the city center. We do not recommend buying tickets from scalpers: the festival has a control system that may prevent you from entering if the ticket was not purchased through official channels.
If you are coming from another city, please note that online sales are not available for most performances. Purchases are in person or through the festival's official social media channels, where special presales are sometimes announced. Be cautious: if someone offers you tickets on social media at much higher prices, be suspicious. Resale is not authorized.
