What the Petronio Álvarez Festival is and why it matters

The Petronio Álvarez Pacific Music Festival stands as the largest Afro culture gathering in Latin America. Every year, Cali stops being the world capital of salsa for a few days and becomes the meeting point for the sounds of the Colombian Pacific: marimba de chonta, currulao, drums, chirimía and voices arriving from Chocó, Buenaventura, Tumaco, Guapi and the entire coastline.

This festival pays tribute to Patricio "Petronio" Álvarez, a musician and composer born in Buenaventura, whose life was dedicated to collecting and researching the traditional music of the Pacific. His legacy is the reason why thousands of musicians, cooks and artisans gather in Cali every August.

But for 2026 there is important news: the festival will not take place at its traditional venue in Cali during August. The organization has confirmed that this year's edition will move to Bogotá, to Corferias, from September 3 to 20, within the framework of the Feria del Hogar. This decision was made after the cancellation of the event in Cali due to the magnitude 7.4 earthquake that affected the region, seeking to reactivate the economy of Pacific merchants by bringing more than one hundred exhibitors directly to the capital.

If you are a tourist and already had your trip to Cali planned for August, this guide will be useful: here we explain what happened, how to experience it in Bogotá and what you can do in Cali so you don't miss the essence of the Pacific.

Event details: dates, venue and schedule

Petronio Álvarez Festival 2026 at Corferias, Bogotá

The 2026 edition will be integrated into the Feria del Hogar at Corferias, the largest fairground in Bogotá, located on Avenida La Esperanza with Carrera 40. For almost three weeks, the Pacific pavilion will concentrate the best of Afro-Colombian culture in a single space.

The schedule is structured around three axes that have been the heart of the Petronio since its first edition in 1997:

  • Live music: traditional groups and new proposals that fuse marimba with jazz, hip hop and electronic music. The historic competition categories are maintained: traditional group, free group, marimba, chirimía, violín caucano and unreleased song.
  • Pacific gastronomy: food stalls where cooking happens live. Expect to find encocado de jaiba, arroz de camarón, piangua, tapao de pescado, marranitas, aborrajados and the unmissable viche and tumbo as ancestral drinks.
  • Crafts and fashion: iraca palm weavings, wood carvings, handmade percussion instruments and contemporary Afro fashion designs.

The festival at Corferias will operate during fair hours, generally from mid-morning until night. It is recommended to check the official concert schedule before planning your visit, since the main artists usually perform at specific times and not every day.

Vísperas de Petronio in Bogotá: Latino Power

Before the official start at Corferias, the celebration begins with the Vísperas de Petronio, a night dedicated to the sounds of the Pacific held at Latino Power, one of the most recognized live music venues in Bogotá. It is a more intimate prelude, with DJ sets and live performances that serve to kick off the party.

If you will be in Bogotá those days, it is worth checking the tickets for this event separately, since it is not included in the general Corferias admission.

Prices and how to get tickets

Admission to the Petronio Álvarez within Corferias works with the general Feria del Hogar ticketing. This means you buy an access ticket to the fairground and with it you can tour all the pavilions, including the Pacific one.

Reference prices for September 2026 usually range from promotional rates for advance purchase to same-day box office prices. The exact values change depending on the day of the week and the purchase channel, so the most advisable thing is to check directly the official Corferias or Feria del Hogar website before traveling.

Tips for getting tickets without complications:

  • Buy online in advance. Weekends are the days of highest demand.
  • If you go on a weekday, you will find lower rates and shorter lines.
  • Children and seniors usually have discounts, but verify the current conditions.
  • Save your digital ticket on your phone and also a screenshot in case the signal fails inside the venue.

How to get there

If you're going to Bogotá (2026 venue)

Corferias is located in the Teusaquillo district, on Avenida La Esperanza with Carrera 40, very close to El Dorado International Airport. The most practical ways to get there are:

  • TransMilenio: get off at the Corferias station (Line K) and walk a few minutes to the main entrance.
  • Taxi or ride-hailing app: from downtown Bogotá the trip takes between 20 and 40 minutes depending on traffic. From the airport, about 15 minutes.
  • Bicycle: Bogotá has bike lanes that reach the area. There are bicycle parking areas nearby.

Keep in mind Bogotá traffic during peak hours: if your favorite concert is in the afternoon, leave with at least an hour of margin.

If you're going to Cali (for future editions)

The historic venue of the Petronio Álvarez in Cali is the Unidad Deportiva Alberto Galindo, in the south of the city, on Calle 9 with Carrera 50 approximately. It is easily reached by taxi from any area of Cali, and there are also MIO routes (the Cali mass transit system) that pass nearby.

If you travel to Cali in August expecting the Petronio, keep in mind that in 2026 the event will not be there. Even so, the city maintains its cultural agenda: salsa, Pacific gastronomy in neighborhoods like El Popular and Aguablanca, and an Afro music scene that doesn't stop.

Tips for attendees

What to bring

  • Comfortable, cool clothing: Corferias is a large venue and you will walk a lot. Bogotá tends to be cold, so bring a light jacket for the night.
  • Cash: although many stalls accept cards, artisans and traditional cooks prefer cash. Bring small bills.
  • Reusable water bottle: there are hydration points, but the lines can be long.
  • Sunscreen: if you go during the daytime, don't forget to apply it.
  • Closed-toe shoes: the pavilion floors are not always the most comfortable for sandals.

Estimated budget

For a full day at the Petronio at Corferias, calculate a budget that includes admission, transportation, food and some craft. Pacific food dishes tend to be abundant and well served, so with two meals you cover the day. Reference prices for September 2026 vary, but the festival is characterized by keeping accessible options.

Etiquette and cultural respect

The Petronio is not just a music festival: it is a space of memory and resistance for Afro-Colombian communities. Some recommendations:

  • Ask permission before taking photos of musicians or artisans at their stalls.
  • Listen carefully to the traditional performances; they are not a backdrop for the party.
  • If you try viche or tumbo, do so with respect: they are ancestral drinks with history, not nightclub shots.
  • Buy directly from artisans and cooks. Every purchase supports Pacific families.

Recommended 3-day itinerary: Petronio + salsa + caleña culture

Although in 2026 the Petronio will be experienced in Bogotá, this itinerary is designed for when the festival returns to Cali, or to combine it with a trip to the capital. We present it as a three-day route that mixes the Pacific with salsa.

Day 1: Pure Pacific

Spend the morning touring the craft and food stalls. Have a tapao de pescado or an encocado de jaiba for lunch. In the afternoon, sit in front of the main stage and listen to the traditional groups: marimba, drums and voices that will give you goosebumps.
