Bocagrande is not a town: it's a peninsula of towers

Bocagrande is the strip of tall buildings that closes off the bay of Cartagena to the north, with an urban beach of gray sand and an avenue where traffic never rests. There are no colorful little houses or cobblestone streets here: there are apartment towers, hotels, banks, pharmacies and restaurants. If you book expecting the rhythm of Getsemaní, you're in for a surprise. If you book knowing what it is, you have the best base to combine a walkable beach, nearby supermarkets and quick access to the Centro Histórico.

This guide gathers the reference price ranges for November 2026 and the criteria almost nobody checks before paying. On malokal.com you can use the interactive cards for each sector to check the safe map by neighborhood (Locales vs. Extranjeros), live holiday schedules and book directly via WhatsApp with verified hosts.

Available options: the four types of apartment that are actually rented

On booking portals everything looks like an "ocean view", but in practice Bocagrande is rented in four very different modalities. Distinguishing them is the difference between paying for what you see and paying for what you were promised.

Front ocean view

This is the unit that faces the Caribbean Sea directly, usually on the first line along Avenida San Martín or along the boardwalk. Wide windows, a real balcony and constant breeze. It's the most expensive option and the one that sells out fastest in high season. Note: "first line" doesn't always mean an unobstructed view; a neighboring building can block the angle if you're on a low floor.

Side view

The unit faces the sea diagonally, often from the side of the building. It's the most confusing category on the market: some hosts list it as "ocean view" without clarifying that it's partial. It usually comes cheaper than the front view and, on high floors, the visual difference is smaller than it seems. Always ask for a photo taken from the window, not from the balcony looking inward.

Interior or street view

These are the apartments that face the inner courtyard, the light well or the street. They're the cheapest and, well chosen, the quietest if the courtyard is enclosed. The trade-off is light: an interior unit in a tall building can spend the day in shadow and force you to use air conditioning and artificial lights from early on.

Studio apartments in residential buildings

Many buildings in Bocagrande are mixed-use: permanent residents and tourist apartments in the same block. That changes the experience (pool rules, common area hours, visitor control) and it's worth asking before booking. Not all buildings allow parties or additional visitors.

Updated costs (November 2026 reference)

Prices in Bocagrande vary a lot depending on season, floor and type of view. The following ranges are references for the current period and serve to detect whether an offer is below or above the market. Always verify the final price with the host, because rates change by week and by event.

  • Interior or street-facing studio apartment: from $180,000 COP per night in low season; it can rise considerably on long weekends and in December.
  • One-bedroom apartment with side view: mid-range, with strong variation depending on floor and building.
  • Two-bedroom apartment with front ocean view: the premium category of the neighborhood; in high season prices multiply and availability shrinks.
  • Additional charges: many buildings charge a final cleaning fee, a security deposit or a fee for use of the pool and common areas. Ask for it in writing.

And a detail that gets overlooked: published rates usually don't include the accommodation tax or the platform commission. Always compare the total for the stay, not the per-night price shown in the listing.

Estimated times and how the season changes

Bocagrande runs on its own calendar. High season in Cartagena is concentrated in December and January, Holy Week and Colombian long weekends. On those dates prices go up, building elevators work at their limit and the public beach fills up early.

  • Book in advance: in high season, units with front views sell out weeks ahead. In low season you can decide with just a few days' notice.
  • Elevators: in buildings with many floors, the wait at peak hours (morning and sunset) can be noticeable. If you travel with reduced mobility or small children, ask how many elevators the building has and whether there's a service one.
  • Beach access: the beach at Bocagrande is public, but the usable space facing the sea is limited and vendors and tent services occupy much of the front. Arrive early in high season if you want a good spot.
  • Transfers: from Rafael Núñez airport to Bocagrande the distance is short, but it can stretch out with avenue traffic. Allow extra margin at peak hours.

The variable almost nobody checks: orientation, sun and noise

Two identical apartments in the same building can feel like different hotels depending on their orientation. In Bocagrande, the afternoon sun hits hard on the facades that face west and the open sea. An apartment with a spectacular view can turn into an oven between midday and sunset if it doesn't have good air conditioning or blinds.

Noise is the other factor. Avenida San Martín and Primera Avenida concentrate bus, motorcycle and car traffic for much of the day. Low floors facing those roads are the most exposed; high floors and units facing the inner courtyard or the open sea sound very different. If you're a light sleeper, ask the host to confirm the exact location of the apartment's main window.

A practical detail: the sea breeze helps, but it doesn't replace air conditioning in the hottest months. Ask whether the AC is per room or only in the living room, because sleeping with a fan in Cartagena in the dry season is not the same as sleeping with AC.

Practical tips: checklist before paying

There are questions worth asking before you hand over your card. Write them to the host through the platform chat or WhatsApp, and keep the answer in writing.

  1. What floor is it on and how many elevators does the building have? An 18th floor with a single elevator changes your daily routine.
  2. Is the view front, side or interior? Ask for a photo from the window and confirm the orientation relative to the sea.
  3. Is there air conditioning in all the bedrooms? And whether there's an additional charge for energy on long stays.
  4. Is there hot water? Cartagena's climate is warm, but many apartments don't have a water heater and some travelers miss it.
  5. What is the visitor and party policy? Many residential buildings don't allow additional visitors or noise after a certain hour.
  6. What charges are not included? Final cleaning, deposit, pool or parking use.
  7. Is there a generator or water tank? In high-demand seasons there can be outages; a prepared building makes the difference.

If you're booking in Bocagrande for the first time, prioritize location and floor over the "ocean view" in the listing. A well-located, quiet interior apartment can give you better rest than a front view over the noisiest avenue in the neighborhood.

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth paying for an ocean view in Bocagrande?

It depends on how much time you spend in the apartment. If your plan is beach and city all day, a well-chosen side or interior view saves you money without ruining the experience. If the balcony and the sunset are part of the trip, the front view is justified, but confirm with real photos that the angle isn't blocked by another building.

Is Bocagrande noisy at night?

It depends on the street and the floor. Units facing Avenida San Martín and Primera Avenida have more traffic; those facing the open sea or inner courtyards are quieter. Ask the host about the exact location of the main window and, if you're a light sleeper, choose high floors.
